Piers Morgan and Mick McCarthy clash live on TV over 17-year Man Utd feud

Piers Morgan and Mick McCarthy reignited a 17-year feud with the former Ireland boss calling the show host a "w*****".

McCarthy was a guest on Morgan's Sports Uncensored show but the subject matter changed from England's World Cup to one of Big Mick's managerial calls when he was in charge of Wolves back in 2009.

During that year, Manchester United and Morgan's beloved Arsenal were in a title race but in mid-December McCarthy chose to rest 10 outfield players during a midweek 3-0 loss at Old Trafford.

McCarthy's rationale for doing that was the two matches either side. His Wolves team, then playing in the top flight following promotion the year prior, had secured a 1-0 win at Tottenham three days before. He then saw his ful- strength side land a 2-0 win over Burnley . They would avoid relegation by eight points at the end of the season.

Morgan was livid though as he felt it gift wrapped United three points whilst he also saw Arsenal held by Burnley. He later called for the then Wolves boss to be sacked - and the pair clearly still had differing opinions.

McCarthy said: "My job is to win games. We went to Spurs the Saturday before, we won 1–0 with about 35 per cent possession. We've got Manchester United on the Tuesday. I went there, I dropped 10 players. I have a squad of 22. If I'm a manager, it's my right to manage that team how I see fit and get results."

Morgan replied: "And it's my right as an Arsenal fan who was directly impacted by it". McCarthy attempted to set him straight and claimed the Gunners "weren't good enough to win the title, and Sir Alex [Ferguson] won it again. And you weren't good enough, so you blame me, which is real bad on your part."

The broadcaster doubled down on his point and said: "Just to be clear: by dropping 10 players, you let United walk all over you, which had a direct impact on my team's chances of winning the league. I thought that was an appalling abrogation of your duty as a manager to entertain the fans with the best available team."

The former Wolves boss underlined the fact his job was to keep Wolves in the Premier League and, regardless of who questioned his methods, he ultimately achieved it and banked £100m for the club as they remained a top flight club.

Morgan questioned whether he'd feel differently if a rival had profited at his expense if they played against a much changed side and McCarthy admitted: "I'm going to moan like a b***h, like you do!" before both men admitted they were hypocrites.
