Argentina's defeat against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final continues to generate repercussions. In recent hours, a petition for FIFA to replay the tournament's last match has gained momentum, in which Spain won 1-0 after Ferran Torres' goal in extra time.

The initiative, created by a fan identified as Gisela Sánchez, has already gathered thousands of signatures and has reignited the controversy surrounding the outcome of the championship.

In recent hours, a petition on the Change.org platform has gained momentum, calling on FIFA to replay the match, considering that the "controversial and corrupt" performance of the Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic harmed La Albiceleste in decisive moments of the match.

'Sánchez states that the videos show that some of the referee's decisions "clearly favored one team over the other, altering the natural course of the match", causing a "monumental disappointment for the players, coaches, and above all, the fans".'

'For this reason, it asks football's governing body to review these incidents with "seriousness and transparency", and to "consider" replaying the final without the influence of a "corrupt referee".'

The initiative that seeks "justice not only for Argentina, but for the future of world football" has already gathered more than 67,500 signatures.

However, the story took an unexpected turn. In Argentina, the outlet El Canciller claimed that it was a "fake news" story, and questioned the truthfulness of this campaign, considering that an individual petition published online was circulated as if there were an organized national initiative to gather signatures and demand that the final be replayed.

According to that outlet, there was no official plan or initiative representative of the whole country, but rather an isolated proposal that ended up being amplified on social media and in international media.

Beyond the controversy and the fact that its origin has been questioned, this isn't the first time a World Cup defeat has led to campaigns of this kind. After the Qatar 2022 final, a petition was also launched by French fans to try to overturn the result against Argentina, although that initiative also had no effect on the outcome.
