Sander Berge was first linked with a transfer to Manchester United all the way back in 2020 – when fans even became convinced they had spotted him arriving at their training ground .

Six years on, speculation has reignited on whether the Fulham star will make a long-awaited move to Old Trafford after an impressive World Cup 2026 with Norway. The 28-year-old started five of their six games with the Scandinavian nation progressing to the quarter-finals before being knocked out by England.

Michael Carrick is in the process of overhauling United's midfield with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arriving earlier this week from Chelsea and Aston Villa , respectively. A third signing in the engine room is on the cards for the United boss with reports suggesting renewed contact has been made with Berge this summer.

A move to Manchester would conclude quite the saga for Berge. Prior to his 2020 move to Sheffield United, football fans believed Berge would join his Norwegian compatriot Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at United .

Their confidence came from spotting an individual being driven into Carrington Training Centre during the final days of the January transfer window . With deadline day approaching, speculation was constant over any winter additions United may make in their chase of a top-four finish.

The social media frenzy reached a peak when an individual - who continues to remain unidentified - was snapped in the backseat of a Mercedes making his way into Carrington. Fans immediately went on the hunt to uncover the identity of the ma, believing he was set to become the latest signing to grace the Theatre of Dreams.

Berge, 28, was the chief suspect among supporters, but the theory turned out to be incorrect as the midfielder wound up signing for Sheffield United two days after his supposed appearance in Manchester.
