Dominik Szoboszlai is understood to be on the cusp of committing his future to the club after reaching an agreement in principle on a new contract.
The news will come as a significant boost to
Liverpool
's new manager,
Andoni Iraola
, who was
named as Arne Slot's successor last month
.
Szoboszlai
was one if not Liverpool's most consistent performers during a challenging 2025-26 campaign which culminated in Slot losing his job after overseeing a fifth place finish, even filling in at right-back on occasions.
Szoboszlai had two years remaining on his current deal heading into the summer but speculation over his long-term future had been growing as a result of his stellar form, while the player himself
conceded that talks had stalled
back in April.
It now seems as though Szoboszlai will be staying at Anfield for the foreseeable future, though, with
The Guardian
confirming contract terms have been provisionally agreed.
Not only will such news be welcomed by Iraola as he prepares to take charge of his maiden campaign, it will be well received among other figures: including club legend
Steven Gerrard
, who has made it clear he is a big fan of Szoboszlai.
The Hungary captain's swashbuckling, all-action style of play and penchant for a spectacular goal has already seen him likened to one of Liverpool's all-time great players. And Gerrard even predicted earlier this year that Szoboszlai would go on to follow in his footsteps
by donning the captain's armband in the future
"I like his mentality," Gerrard told TNT Sports back in March. "He's evolved, and he's grown a lot since he's become a
player.

"We obviously signed a big talent. He's in the prime years of his career. I think Liverpool are going to see the best of him.
"I hope he stays around for a long time because I think there's a potential captain in there. The way he's playing and his consistency and his mentality, you can hear it in his voice.
"He's straight on to the next game, talking about
Brighton
. I love that about him. He's flying at the moment. He's full of confidence. He's got everything going for him. He's just got to maintain it and stay healthy."
