Inter Milan hold talks over deal to sign Tottenham defender Cristian Romero - as Argentina defender prepares to thwart England at World Cup
Inter Milan
have had tentative discussions with
Tottenham
over defender Cristian Romero.
The Argentine, a divisive figure for supporters in recent months, will leave Spurs this summer but his wages and transfer fee will limit options.
Romero is still technically Tottenham's captain, but will pass on that mantle, with his future to be decided at the end of Argentina's participation in the World Cup.
The defender and his team-mates will face
England
in Atlanta this evening, with Romero expected to start in a bid to lead his side to a second-consecutive final.
Argentina are looking to defend their title they won four years ago in Qatar. Should they beat England, they will set up a final with Spain on Sunday. If they lose, they will face France in a third-place play-off on Saturday.
At club level, Romero received criticism for his performances last season and then when he left England for the season run-in and relegation battle.

Barcelona are also among clubs monitoring Romero. Their priority, however, is Julian Alvarez, who remains a target for Arsenal.
Inter also asked about Spurs full-back
Djed Spence
, as reported by
Daily Mail Sport
on Monday, and have discussed his England team-mate
John Stones
, who is a free agent after leaving
Manchester City
.
The Italian side want to sign two centre backs this summer.
Spurs' midfielder Lucas Bergvall remains on Nottingham Forest's radar and Aston Villa have considered reviving interest. However, despite the Swede wanting more game time, Spurs are not actively looking to sell so the asking price could be relatively steep.
