Hands off Granit Xhaka! Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris sends definitive message to Chelsea and insists 'the topic is closed' after Xabi Alonso's side made shock swoop for former Bayer Leverkusen star

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has issued a hands-off warning for his captain Granit Xhaka and told Chelsea to forget about signing him this summer.

The Swiss international was instrumental as the Black Cats finished in the European spots on their return to Premier League football last season – and Chelsea have tried to buy him. But boss Le Bris says there is now no chance of Xhaka leaving.

‘No, this topic is closed,’ said the Frenchman when asked about Xhaka.

‘He has been really clear about his future. He loves Sunderland, he wants to stay in Sunderland. He wants to make the future of Sunderland. He is a good captain. A great leader.’

Daily Mail Sport reported earlier this month how Chelsea had an £8m bid rejected and dismissed as insulting. Although the 33-year-old was attracted by the prospect of reuniting with Xabi Alonso - having enjoyed a successful spell under him at Bayer Leverkusen - Xhaka reaffirmed his commitment to Sunderland following discussions with the club.

Xhaka's strong rapport with Sunderland supporters and his connection with the club also played an important role in his desire to continue his journey at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland signed 14 players this time last year as they overhauled their squad upon promotion from the Championship – but Le Bris has told fans to be patient this time around.

They have made just one signing in experienced full back Thomas Meunier, the Belgian international who joins on a free transfer from Lille.

Le Bris added: ‘It’s going to be quiet. Under the radar, right? Because I think we are working hard behind the scenes, and it's really important to be quiet because otherwise, it's a mess.

‘And we are looking at probably a different transfer window if you compare with last season. We had to sign 14 new players. That won't be the case this year. We'll see what will happen.’
