EXCLUSIVE: Fernandes commits to Manchester United despite new contract wait as Red Devils skipper makes firm decision on future

Bruno Fernandes has agreed to pledge his future to Manchester United. And the Portuguese superstar is expected to confirm he is staying at Old Trafford before the end of this month.

Fernandes is currently on his summer break, following his participation in the World Cup in North America. The United captain is due back to pre-season training next week.

Talks between his representatives and United bosses about a new and improved deal have been on-going. And while no agreement has been reached, it's understood Fernandes has decided to commit himself to United.

His future had been in doubt for the last 12 months.

Last summer, Fernandes considered leaving United to cash-in on a lucrative deal in the Saudi Pro League. He decided to have one more season at Old Trafford instead, to see if the club could match his ambitions.

The arrival of Michael Carrick as manager made a huge difference to Fernandes.

United secured a return to the Champions League, and continue to make signings in a bid to give Carrick the best possible chance of winning trophies next season.

Fernandes, 31, has entered the final season of his current deal, but has the option of a 12-month extension.

Carrick has been keen to secure the future of Fernandes, as he plots an assault on the Premier League title next season. And with Fernandes knowing this could be the last big deal of his career at the highest level, last season's player of the year is expected to become the club's highest paid star on a deal worth around £400,000-a-week.

Keeping Fernandes will be a huge boost to United, considering how influential he has been since joining them from Sporting Lisbon in a £47m deal in 2020.
