Enzo Maresca offers Arsenal new Man City 115 charges update amid points deduction fears

Enzo Maresca has been questioned by the media on Manchester City's ongoing situation relating to the alleged 115 financial breaches

It’s now been more than three years since Manchester City were charged with allegedly breaching the Premier League's financial fair play rules from 2009 to 2018. While at the time it was believed the Premier League levelled 115 charges at City, there is belief the number is closer to around 130.

Man City deny all the charges against them, for which Pep Guardiola, Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Mancini were all managers during that time. Now, with the Spaniard having left, there is a new man in charge to take on the likes of Arsenal next season.

Enzo Maresca took over the role as manager and faced the media in his first press conference since taking over the role after leaving Chelsea last year. After fielding questions on his style, expectations and Rodri’s future, the inevitable question did indeed come.

Asked about the charges facing the club, Maresca reminded everyone that he in fact at the club when City received them. The Italian is adamant that he is not worried about the situation.

“The only thing I can say is three years ago, the Treble season, I was here, and it was the same words about this. In three years, it’s still the same,” he said. “Nothing has happened. I don’t have any concerns personally”.

If City were to be found guilty of the charges, there are a variety of potential punishments ranging from fines to points deductions or even expulsion from the league. Arsenal have seen City beat them to the title on several occasions under Mikel Arteta until he eventually won out last season.

Arsenal go into the new campaign as champions but Maresca is already planning to try and steal back the crown from their main rivals. Arteta was asked in 2024 for his thoughts on the charges City face.

Arteta spent time with City as an assistant coach to Guardiola during the time when City are alleged to have committed their offences.

"That’s something for the authorities to manage. It’s not for us," Arteta said. "If they’re playing, that means they can play, and they are entitled to play. That’s it."

Arsenal will face Manchester City in the FA Community Shield in Cardiff on August 16. It will be the first time Maresca and Arteta will meet since the Italian was in charge of Chelsea.
