England's World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina was never going to be friendly, with incidents like the 'Hand of God' goal in 1986 lingering. And 40 years ago, Three Lions star Steve Hodge was lambasted by his peers after swapping shirts with culprit Diego Maradona.
Few teams share as much bitter history at World Cup competitions as England and Argentina. They first faced off at the tournament in the 1962 group stage, and England prevailed 3-1.
Four years later, en route to their sole World Cup title, the Three Lions beat them 1-0 in a quarter-final tie marred by fierce tackles. Beckham's red card in 1998 , slight revenge in 2002 and this latest, heartbreaking 2-1 defeat followed. But the 1986 last-eight tie remains the most infamous match in the event's history .

Wednesday's semi-final defeat was rife with controversy. This included Jude Bellingham's supposed post-match slap , the heated exchanges and members of Argentina's squad unfurling a contentious Falklands War-referencing banner during their celebrations.
But 1986 was a different kettle of fish. Four years after the conclusion of the conflict that took 907 lives , England stared down Argentina at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City in a match that transcended a mere sporting event.

Over 114,000 people packed into the stadium on June 22, and whilst the tense first half went by without a hitch, the game would spring to life in the second.
In the 51st minute, a sliced interception from Hodge looped back towards Three Lions goalkeeper Peter Shilton and Maradona ran in to challenge.

What happened next is etched into the mind of every England fan, young and old. The mercurial Maradona leaped and used his left fist to punch the ball into the net.
Four minutes later, he produced a moment of magic with a 60-yard run that resulted in his side's lead being doubled. Gary Lineker's 81st-minute strike was not enough and England were sent packing in a 2-1 loss.
But after the game, the animosity did not end. Hodge had swapped shirts with Maradona, who was being labelled a cheat and team-mate Kenny Sansom said: "Certain words were said in the dressing room.
"It was an angry place to be because we felt we'd been cheated. Some of us had a go at Steve Hodge asking why he wanted Maradona's shirt when he was a cheat."

Hodge was Peter Reid's roommate in Mexico and the former Everton star added: "When we were in the hotel, he got the shirt out with the number 10 on it and says, 'What about that then?'
